The 17th Royal Scots battalion of 106 Brigade, 35th Division had been involved in the fighting on the Somme which began with the German Spring offensive on March 21st, 1918. George Chambers died from wounds on 26th April but it is not known where and when he was wounded.

George enlisted in to the Middlesex battalion at Mill Hill in May 1916. He was under age and despite protests from his mother managed to remain in the army. In September 1916 he was transferred to Army reserve and spent time in Chatham. Landing in France in February 1918 with the Royal Scots, he was wounded and died at the 29th Casualty Clearing Station and is buried at Bagneux British cemetery Gazaincourt, France He is remembered at the Scottish national war memorial Edinburgh and Holy Trinity Church, East Finchley.(Information provided by Ralph Surry)
